Picture Placeholders PowerPoint 2007

In PowerPoint 2007 for the first time we can create custom Layouts for slides rather than the ones provided. This is a great step forward!

As well as the "old" Text and Content Placeholders we can now also add specific Picture Placeholders and also Chart, table and other specific types.

This is just about the Picture Placeholders

How are Picture Placeholders Different?

At first sight the new placeholders seem to be specialized copies of the existing content placeholder. The Picture Placeholder though works differently - from a designer's point of view it works properly (for most of our designs)!

If I design a layout with a picture 500mm x 300mm then I want that picture to be that exact size and undistorted EVEN if the picture aspect is not the same as the placeholder aspect. This is what a picture placeholder does. If the aspect if different it fits EITHER the width or height as appropriate and crops the top/bottom or left/right evenly. The actual picture though will be the same size as the placeholder.

Do th same with a content placeholder and the picture is resized to it's largest undistorted size which will always be smaller than the placeholder if the aspect ratio is different.

So Far So Good!

The problem comes when that parts of the image that PowerPoint crops off are the parts your need.

In the GUI you can adjust the image by noting the setting for position in "Size and Position"

Then alter the crop Top / Bottom or crop Left / Right keeping the TOTAL amount of crop the same

e.g. change 2.35 Top and 2.35 Bottom >>>>>> 0.35 /4.35 to show more of the top.

You will see that the placeholder will move and by putting back the position values you can position it back to its original place.

Phew - not easy!

If you do this a lot then you will need SMARTcrop an Add In which makes the adjustment child's play (well Adult's play)

To be released June 2009 in home (non commercial) and Multidesk and Enterprise versions. Email for more information or pre release notes.
